Watching a welder at work is a fascinating sight. If you have always wanted to weld, it is not actually as hard as you might think to get started. The trick is to start off with small projects and try out a number of different welding techniques so that you can learn as much as you can about this time honored skill.

Welding is a very useful art that can really help during those small DIY or auto projects. For example, with a little welding knowledge and experience, you could save some money fitting your own car parts or repairing small metal components around your property. 

Investing In Welding Equipment

When it comes to welding, safety has to be your number one concern rather than technique. Welders get hot, very hot. Just one wrong move could end up in a very painful lesson you won’t forget. You’ll need to invest in the best safety gear alongside your welding equipment, but the basics include. 

• The Welder – The most important piece of welding equipment is the welder itself. There are essentially three different types – the MIG welder, the TIG welder and the stick welder. We recommend you start off with the stick welder as it is a good tool to learn the basics and perfect for accomplishing those DIY projects. 
• Inert Gas (MIG and TIG) – Stick welders use electricity to heat up, but if you want to go one step further and try your hand at MIG or TIG welding, you’ll need some inert gas. This gas shields the arc and welding area from any gases that occur naturally in the atmosphere and which could ruin the weld. 
• Safety Gear – Safety gear is an absolute must no matter what type of welding you are going to learn. A good welding mask will help to protect your face and eyes from sparks and provide UV protection for the eyes. It is also essential to wear fire and heat resistant clothing and well fitting gloves. Good gloves that fit properly will help you to ensure a smooth and controlled weld. For further protection, we also recommend robust boots and a welding respirator. 

How to Learn or Teach Yourself Welding

Thanks to the many different training courses available and online “how to” videos, it is possible to learn the basics of welding very easily. It is important to remember that while your first welds might be a little messy, they can only get better. 

Take a look in your local area to see if there are any night classes or workshops offering basic welding tuition. If you are starting off with a stick welder, you might want to look at some of the instructional videos on YouTube.  A stick welder can be a very handy tool to have around for standard household repairs.
