Welding is the process that joins materials, usually metals, by causing coalescence.  Most of the time this is done by melting the pieces so that they are fused together  once the molten metal in the welding joint cools and solidifies.  There are a few different methods that are used when welding, gas welding, arc welding MIG welding, and TIG Welding, to name a few.  This “trade” has been used for decades and is still used for numerous projects and repairs that we encounter in our every day lives.
